Designing an Intuitive POS App for Food Delivery Operations

In this project, I redesigned a modern Point of Sale (POS) system for DoorDash, the robust product suite of a leading food-ordering platform.  The POS was specifically designed for restaurant staff to take customer orders with ease and efficiency. The project involved deep research into existing solutions to understand how to simplify the order entry process, reduce training time, and ensure consistency with DoorDash's brand standards while meeting all accessibility requirements.  The result was a friendly POS system designed to streamline workflows and reduce the overall stress on the staff.

Research & Planning

During the research phase, I shadowed servers, kitchen managers, and restaurant staff to understand how the existing tools impacted daily operations. I mapped the full order flow, identified common errors during peak hours, and documented the workarounds staff had created to compensate for poor usability. I also conducted a competitive audit of leading POS systems to identify opportunities for differentiation and simplification. This foundation shaped a clear set of priorities: speed, learnability, and reliability under pressure.

Design & Prototyping

Moving into the design phase, I explored multiple directions for the ordering interface. My primary goal was to reduce the number of taps required to build an order while keeping key modifiers and customizations visible.  I created low-fidelity wireframes to test information hierarchy, then moved into high-fidelity UI designs that defined the visual language, interaction patterns, and component structure. At the same time, I focused on designing a responsive interface that worked well across devices and included clear, calm error states.  The design system evolved alongside the screens to ensure the POS could scale with future features.

Validation & User Testing

During the validation phase, I organized in-depth user testing sessions with restaurant staff to gain practical, real-world insights. By actively involving them in the process, we were able to iterate quickly and uncover friction points that internal analysis had missed. We employed a moderated approach to gather qualitative and behavioural data, ensuring every change was grounded in actual user needs and expectations.  This iterative process enabled us to make strategic design decisions, improve usability, and align the final product more closely with the users' mental models and day-to-day workflows.

The Result

To meet the demand for a modern, efficient POS system for a food ordering company, I worked with a team to deliver an MVP that connected directly to customer needs. Over the course of the project, we refined the design through multiple iterations, usability tests, and close collaboration with engineering. The outcome was a user-centered interface that reduced order entry time, improved onboarding, and gave staff confidence during the busiest shifts. Through this collaborative effort, we successfully delivered the first version of the POS system — a solid foundation for future enhancements in transaction satisfaction.
